A collection of random thoughts 4

Speaker of the Dead
I know there is a book that is a direct squeal to Ender’s Game but decided to go in publication order for this series. Now what hooked me about this book is the mystery surrounding the nature of the Piggies and why they do what they do. The time jump is a fun story convention when done right and in this book it was done right. There is a mystery about Novinha’s family and I enjoyed finding out what happened in the years since she called for a Speaker. Jane is a fun character and she learns what Graff deduces in Ender’s Game which is Ender works best without a net. I am excited to see what happens in the next book.

Dark Matters  S1E1&2
Caught this show on a fluke while browsing Netflix. The premise sounds interesting but in the end not something to hold me long term. I felt like I seen this story before but different setting. The characters really don’t do it for me except for Five and that’s because there is more to her than being a generic mercenary. The mystery of who Five is and who took their memories are nice teases to continue on. Which I may do at a later date.

30 for 30: You Don’t Know Bo
I am not a sports fan but find myself from time to time checking out documentaries on the subject. I first came aware of Bo Jackson from a kids cartoon in the 90s called ProStars. It involved Bo Jackson, Michael Jordan and Wayne Gretzky fighting crime. The idea of a guy playing two sports fascinated me and stayed with me for years. So when I saw this documentary on Netflix I knew I had to watch it. To learn the history behind the legend was a treat and sad to see his career cut short by a freak accident.

The Final Girls (2015)
A young woman dealing with her mother’s death gets sucked into a 80s slasher flick that her deceased mother starred in. A fun movie with many throw backs. I love how the world the characters are transported to takes on the warped physics of movies. What is really amazing is the Flashback scene in how it looks and used later. At first I thought the movie was a dream designed to help her to get over the death of her mother. The ending which I enjoyed squashed those theories. There is some sort of higher power to the reality that goes out of it way to protect the story of the movie. The main example is the fact that the movie ejects the outsiders once they take an active part in the story. They throw the story out of wack in major and almost disastrous way. Evidence for this theory is when they first entered the movie and took no active part in the story the reality resets every 92 minutes.

Watching TV: The 100 Season 1

Spoilers Ahead

I like the mystery behind what happening on Earth that is present in the season. The Ark stuff came a little more interesting toward the middle of the season with the politics and Abby crazy one woman mission to prove the 100 were still alive. The thing is when Earth story bored me the Ark story kept me around and vice versa. That’s the thing it would be nice if both sides of the story were good all the way though and not with what I felt as one story line lagging while the other story line shined.

Now some nagging questions or things that took me out of the story. In the pilot episode they found a weird shaped humanoid skull and after that nothing is done with it. The same with the “monkey prints” they find. Were the grounders supposed to be something else in the early stages of development and changed due to budget or other issues. Later in the season after the Exodus ship leaves the Ark the main characters are located outside the hatch to the Exodus launch bay when the Ark powers down. A few episodes later Kane wakes up by himself with no one else around. It seems all the other characters went to the control room and left Kane to lie on the floor. The time jumps are jarring and confusing. They talk about Winter coming but it’s not mentioned again.

The Ark portion of the story have less things to pull me out of the show. As I write this I can’t remember anything besides the Kane stuff I mentioned above. I want to learn more about the history of the Ark and it’s society. It doesn’t mean I don’t want to learn about the Grounders and other survivors it just that side of the story doesn’t grab me like the Ark stuff does. Which with the ending to the season the Ark story is going to turn into something else.

The relationship stuff bores me but the thing about this show especially in the first few episodes love triangles don’t last long because one member of the various triangles ends up dying. Speaking of relationships Octavia bounces from guy to guy in the opening episodes until she settles on Lincoln. This is not a knock on her but the fact it feels strange for her to be all over Jasper then jump to Atom with no reasoning behind it.I don’t if it’s bad writing or something with teenage girls I don’t understand. It really didn’t matter as Jasper didn’t care and Atom dies. The lack of relationship drama in the Ark part of the story is probably why I enjoyed it more on some level than the Earth stuff.

The Grounders are the main bad guys of the 100 but as the show gets deeper into the season everything is not as black and white as it seems. Which to me is a good thing to see. I have a hard times being invested in them as I seen or read of groups like this many times before. The Reapers seem to be a rehash of the Reavers from Firefly. The Mountain Men are survivors that live in the Mount Weather bunker that the 100 were trying to get to in the first episode. They being of a higher tech level than the Grounders explains the fear. They are bland feeling so far but I will see how the second season goes before I dismiss them.

Overall the show was entertaining and enjoyed it despite my nitpicks above. The good out weighs the bad so far so I going to give the second season a try. I just hope the Earth born humans get more interesting or at least on par with the Ark survivors or The 100.

Warning Mild Spoilers Ahead

My thought on recent things I have watched or read.

Snowpiercer (2013)

Throughout the whole movie I was wondering why are the tail section there? They did not do labor or any other thing of value. Thankfully the ending answer the questions I had. Mason mentions there is a coach class also. I am guessing they are the workers/soldiers we see as Curtis makes his way though the train. The statements made by Mason in the Aquarium about balance had me thinking about the the overall story as it pertains to the rebellions in the past. The movie to me was a middle of the road movie to me until Curtis reveals the nature of life in the tail section on first months of the train operation. Then the info dump Wilford provides in the end serve to move it up in my eyes. Now normally I might have bailed on this movie at the half way point but the mystery of what else was on the train kept me entertained enough to stay until the end which I am glad I did.

Supergirl S1E5

This is the fourth episode aired but the 5th in story order. I understand the decision to air them out of order and except for small plot points (Jimmy/Lucy and bomb reference) you don’t notice an episode was skipped. They have hinted that there was a reason behind Cat’s attitude. This episode it was put out there for all to see. I heard about Livewire and was curiosity about how they were going to introduce the character. The work around they did to fit the character into this universe fit in with the nature of this version of the world. The love triangle (or quadrangle) holds no appeal to me and just frustrating to watch. I am liking the series as a whole and hopefully keep up with it.

Ender’s Game (novel)
I enjoyed the getting inside the mind of Ender and learning why he does what he does. Seeing him start from the bottom in the games and earn his place higher up the command ladder is enjoyable. At no point do you feel he doesn’t earn his spot. The twists at the end are nice little nuggets that add to the experience and makes me want to read the other books in the series.

Ender’s Game (2013)
I watched this because I was interested in what the movie version was like after reading the book. When you remove all the internal struggle from Ender’s story he comes off as a cocky brat. To me without seeing his progression as a leader and tactician I never feel he earns his command. I understand they had to compress the novel but they took the heart out of the story. We are told Ender is a great leader instead of shown he is.  The second half is a little better but feels just as rushed. Normally I am able to separate movie and book from each other. I am not able to do that this time due to the butchered story I am presented.

A Shady Deal

I went to a used car lot to look at some cars today. As I was speaking to the sales person about the details on some of the cars I mention that I would have to sell the current car to a company to come up with the cash for the down payment if anything on the lot stuck my fancy.

The person proceeds to tell me why would you sell your car to that company for that amount. I tell you what you need to do and I listened thinking the person may of knew of something in the area I was unaware of. They then stated all you got to do is take your car down to a title pawn place get $1000 or $1500 and when they call for the first payment tell them you not going to pay and come get the car. I was dumb founded for a second and a little voice in my head said back away slowly.

I didn’t back away but did test drive a car and told my brother the story. I said to him how can I trust these people if they are going to advise me to commit fraud and along with jacking up my credit.  This and the fact they wanted to much money for junk made me leave the lot without a purchase.

Very Short Stories

Super short stories written by my brother (2RC) and I (DMC)

This started with me sending him a the first story in a text message and then we started trading them back in forth. In the ones where you see D/R is the ones we worked together to make a better story. Not all are gems but fun was had coming up with them. Influenced by this post.

1) She went into panic mode when she seen her reflection starting to write on the mirror. The message “Behind You” was never read as the creature devoured her. DMC

2) The man walked out to his front lawn to enjoy the morning sun. That was when he discovered that wasn’t a love bite he received two days ago. The dust that used to be his body made good fertilizer for the front lawn. DMC

3) The salesman ignored the No Solicitors sign and knocked anyway. A hole opened under his feet and he fell into a pit of bones. The last thing he seen was the hole disappearing above him and the light fading away. DMC

4) Every morning I wake up to the dog licking my feet. When I turn over this morning the dog is laying beside me but something is still licking my feet. D/R

5) I walk out my front door every day just to walk back into my living room. I’ve been trapped for years. 2RC

6) My cat loves to lick my feet in morning to wake me up. The fogginess of sleep left me when I remember my cat died three years ago. D/R

7) Finding out your wife died is hard enough without having to convince her every night. 2RC

8) I go to see my psychologist at least 3 times a week for about 3 years now. One day I show up at the building to find out its been a funeral home for the last 15 yrs. 2RC

9) The old man approached his childhood home to warn his younger self of the dangers ahead. The young boy scared by the sudden appearance of the older gentlemen ran from the area and was hit by an oncoming car. The old man faded away as the boy laid bleeding in the street. DMC

10) For every turn I take another road appears. At the end of every road is another turn. It seems I’m going in circles. 2RC

My thoughts on the nice guy label

My thoughts on this article.

I dislike the nice guy label. I grew up in a time and place where being labeled nice guy was a bad thing. If you were a “nice guy” you were considered a push over, dupe or mark and not taken seriously by others. I understand now a days people may considered it a good thing but I still harbor bad feelings about the label. Also on this list geek and nerd. I rather be a person and not shoved into a small box by what entertainment I like/treat people.

As for those jackasses in this article. If you got to state you are a nice guy you are not a nice guy. It like the people that say “I am a grown ass man” as a reply. In both cases you should not have to state who or what you are your actions should speak for you. By screaming from the rooftops what you are you are proving you are not.

Dating sites are rough you have to have a thick skin going into it. I been using them for over a decade. The silence treatment is a given and you have to take like a man and move on. If you have not heard a peep in 24hrs after initial contact just wash your hands of it and move on. I was told once that woman like you to chase them. Maybe in the old days but not anymore. Well at least in the online arena anyway. In the end you wind up looking like these guys wasting energy on someone who doesn’t want to date you. They should spend that energy in other ways that will bring them joy not frustration.

Rebuilding Duckasaurs

Time has not been good to him. Another art project we were assigned to make a humanoid figure from clay.  I went beyond the assignment and made my guy stand up. It’s the reason he has a tail. He has duckbill because it was easier to make than a lizard head. Gave him a hook hand just for the hell of it.

Had to fight for this because a person had his project explode in the kiln due to large amount of clay used right before mine was due to be fired. It destroyed other people’s work. So I had to make a large hole in between the legs which makes him appear to have a anus. The hole was to make the piece thin enough for water to escape when fired. Which the person mentioned earlier didn’t do.

Watching TV: Revenge Season 1 Episodes 18-22

I tried to keep this vague as to not reveal spoilers but after the second episode it was getting to be a confusing mess so I skipped the no spoiler thing.

After reading the description of the series I thought it might be worth something watching. Revenge stories are something I enjoy when done right. So here are some thoughts on the first season. I wrote these thought as I watched the episodes so some incorrect theories will pop up.

Episode 18
So that is how they were planning on keeping Jack out of the picture. Daniel is spiraling into despair. Right now the it does look good for the Graysons but I don’t think it is going to end in a cut and dry manner. I still am wondering what is going on with the artist. One hell of away to get Jack’s ass out of the fire. With the reveal of how deep the Graysons went to buried David Clark the final few episodes are going to be exciting. I wonder what Emily is planning on doing now.

Watching TV: Revenge Season 1 Episodes 13-17

I tried to keep this vague as to not reveal spoilers but after the second episode it was getting to be a confusing mess so I skipped the no spoiler thing.

After reading the description of the series I thought it might be worth something watching. Revenge stories are something I enjoy when done right. So here are some thoughts on the first season. I wrote these thought as I watched the episodes so some incorrect theories will pop up.

Episode 13
The bomb has been dropped. Emily is one cold hearted chick and is in danger of turning into the monster she trying to destroy. Okay now things are clicking into place the lawyer wasn’t a bad man. The fall out from the bomb that was dropped is nasty. Victoria doesn’t even realize what she did. Emily was going to put the plan on pause until Victoria claimed she was raped. Amanda was good character but her story ran its course.
