Watching TV: The 100 Season 1

Spoilers Ahead

I like the mystery behind what happening on Earth that is present in the season. The Ark stuff came a little more interesting toward the middle of the season with the politics and Abby crazy one woman mission to prove the 100 were still alive. The thing is when Earth story bored me the Ark story kept me around and vice versa. That’s the thing it would be nice if both sides of the story were good all the way though and not with what I felt as one story line lagging while the other story line shined.

Now some nagging questions or things that took me out of the story. In the pilot episode they found a weird shaped humanoid skull and after that nothing is done with it. The same with the “monkey prints” they find. Were the grounders supposed to be something else in the early stages of development and changed due to budget or other issues. Later in the season after the Exodus ship leaves the Ark the main characters are located outside the hatch to the Exodus launch bay when the Ark powers down. A few episodes later Kane wakes up by himself with no one else around. It seems all the other characters went to the control room and left Kane to lie on the floor. The time jumps are jarring and confusing. They talk about Winter coming but it’s not mentioned again.

The Ark portion of the story have less things to pull me out of the show. As I write this I can’t remember anything besides the Kane stuff I mentioned above. I want to learn more about the history of the Ark and it’s society. It doesn’t mean I don’t want to learn about the Grounders and other survivors it just that side of the story doesn’t grab me like the Ark stuff does. Which with the ending to the season the Ark story is going to turn into something else.

The relationship stuff bores me but the thing about this show especially in the first few episodes love triangles don’t last long because one member of the various triangles ends up dying. Speaking of relationships Octavia bounces from guy to guy in the opening episodes until she settles on Lincoln. This is not a knock on her but the fact it feels strange for her to be all over Jasper then jump to Atom with no reasoning behind it.I don’t if it’s bad writing or something with teenage girls I don’t understand. It really didn’t matter as Jasper didn’t care and Atom dies. The lack of relationship drama in the Ark part of the story is probably why I enjoyed it more on some level than the Earth stuff.

The Grounders are the main bad guys of the 100 but as the show gets deeper into the season everything is not as black and white as it seems. Which to me is a good thing to see. I have a hard times being invested in them as I seen or read of groups like this many times before. The Reapers seem to be a rehash of the Reavers from Firefly. The Mountain Men are survivors that live in the Mount Weather bunker that the 100 were trying to get to in the first episode. They being of a higher tech level than the Grounders explains the fear. They are bland feeling so far but I will see how the second season goes before I dismiss them.

Overall the show was entertaining and enjoyed it despite my nitpicks above. The good out weighs the bad so far so I going to give the second season a try. I just hope the Earth born humans get more interesting or at least on par with the Ark survivors or The 100.

Warning Mild Spoilers Ahead

My thought on recent things I have watched or read.

Snowpiercer (2013)

Throughout the whole movie I was wondering why are the tail section there? They did not do labor or any other thing of value. Thankfully the ending answer the questions I had. Mason mentions there is a coach class also. I am guessing they are the workers/soldiers we see as Curtis makes his way though the train. The statements made by Mason in the Aquarium about balance had me thinking about the the overall story as it pertains to the rebellions in the past. The movie to me was a middle of the road movie to me until Curtis reveals the nature of life in the tail section on first months of the train operation. Then the info dump Wilford provides in the end serve to move it up in my eyes. Now normally I might have bailed on this movie at the half way point but the mystery of what else was on the train kept me entertained enough to stay until the end which I am glad I did.

Supergirl S1E5

This is the fourth episode aired but the 5th in story order. I understand the decision to air them out of order and except for small plot points (Jimmy/Lucy and bomb reference) you don’t notice an episode was skipped. They have hinted that there was a reason behind Cat’s attitude. This episode it was put out there for all to see. I heard about Livewire and was curiosity about how they were going to introduce the character. The work around they did to fit the character into this universe fit in with the nature of this version of the world. The love triangle (or quadrangle) holds no appeal to me and just frustrating to watch. I am liking the series as a whole and hopefully keep up with it.

Ender’s Game (novel)
I enjoyed the getting inside the mind of Ender and learning why he does what he does. Seeing him start from the bottom in the games and earn his place higher up the command ladder is enjoyable. At no point do you feel he doesn’t earn his spot. The twists at the end are nice little nuggets that add to the experience and makes me want to read the other books in the series.

Ender’s Game (2013)
I watched this because I was interested in what the movie version was like after reading the book. When you remove all the internal struggle from Ender’s story he comes off as a cocky brat. To me without seeing his progression as a leader and tactician I never feel he earns his command. I understand they had to compress the novel but they took the heart out of the story. We are told Ender is a great leader instead of shown he is.  The second half is a little better but feels just as rushed. Normally I am able to separate movie and book from each other. I am not able to do that this time due to the butchered story I am presented.

SPOILERS AHEAD
I tried to keep this vague as to not reveal spoilers but after the second episode it was getting to be a confusing mess so I skipped the no spoiler thing.

After reading the description of the series I thought it might be worth something watching. Revenge stories are something I enjoy when done right. So here are some thoughts on the first season. I wrote these thought as I watched the episodes so some incorrect theories will pop up.

Episode 18
So that is how they were planning on keeping Jack out of the picture. Daniel is spiraling into despair. Right now the it does look good for the Graysons but I don’t think it is going to end in a cut and dry manner. I still am wondering what is going on with the artist. One hell of away to get Jack’s ass out of the fire. With the reveal of how deep the Graysons went to buried David Clark the final few episodes are going to be exciting. I wonder what Emily is planning on doing now.

Episode 13
The bomb has been dropped. Emily is one cold hearted chick and is in danger of turning into the monster she trying to destroy. Okay now things are clicking into place the lawyer wasn’t a bad man. The fall out from the bomb that was dropped is nasty. Victoria doesn’t even realize what she did. Emily was going to put the plan on pause until Victoria claimed she was raped. Amanda was good character but her story ran its course.

Episode 7
I glad to see she keeps her father box hidden I was worried after previous episodes of seeing her shove it in to a desk that how she normally kept it. We get more of a peek into Emily’s past and I like the mystery surrounding her. She has a interesting mentor. Tyler being gay makes a lot of sense as does his reasoning behind everything. Frank is really good at what he does till the end. Intriguing is the relationship between Emily and Amanda.

After reading the description of the series I thought it might be worth something watching. Revenge stories are something I enjoy when done right. So here are some thoughts on the first season. I wrote these thought as I watched the episodes so some incorrect theories will pop up.

Episode 1
The show starts off with scene that takes place five months in the future. This scene does pique my interest in terms of story and how the characters got to where they are at the party. When we find out what happens to Emily’s father I was thinking at first it was something small but the scope of crime that her father frame for had me shocked and a bit more intrigued. Lydia was a small cog in the machine but was the prefect setup of how truly evil Victoria can be. The ending was a nice way to give all the back story of who Emily was and who she used to be. Which appeared to be a bad ass chick with the way she handled Nolan and with the scene of her getting released from juvie. The side stories with Jack’s family do look to be something that can lead to some interesting stories. Anyway if the rest of the season is like this this I can find myself enjoying the show.

Thoughts on things I have read or watched recently.

World War Z
I enjoyed the movie but the ending felt abrupt. One thing this movie did bring to the table that I have not seen in other zombies/infected movies is the seeing the effects on the whole world. Which is one of the good things it took from the book. I enjoyed the book much more. I enjoyed how the story was told. Which was though different accounts recorded by a UN worker after the major fight against the zombie horde was over.

Under the Dome
Watched Under the Dome not bad. Based on the first episode you might as well forget what you read in the book. Things like character names & personality traits stay the same but a lot things are way different. Duke, Joe & Angie seemed to be the combination of several characters. The first intro to Barbie is a WTF moment for me. Julia being married is also a curve ball. Anyway The Dome concept is what hooked me on the book so I can live with the changes if the story winds up being good.

Whodunnit?
Whodunnit? was fun to watch. Have no idea who the killer is but figured out how the first person was killed with about 80% success. I seen the Mole aspects and a little Murder in Small Town X. The format is better than Murder in Small Town X though. I will continue to watch and see how the show rolls along. One last thing how can you find a lead ball in bedded in the back of someones neck and think they drowned. No wonder this person was the next victim.

Face Off
I have been marathon this show since I heard it mentioned on several podcasts. I have made it though season 3 so far. In the beginning of the seasons you can tell who has the worse designs right away but as it gets deeper into the show it gets harder to tell who will go home each week. I love the creative aspects of the show and it makes me want to do something creative. The only negative thing I don’t like about the show is the manufactured drama that is present. I understand the point of it but it makes me want to fast forward.

Walking Dead Rise of the Governor
I enjoyed the book it has several parallels to the comic series. The thing that kept me reading was the mystery of what happens to the group as we only really know the fates of The Governor and Penny. I think this book would have been better suited with the title of the second book which is Road to Woodsbury.

Survivor Guatemala Rewatch Part 4

In case you missed it here is Part 1 , Part 2 and Part 3

Final Six episodes 12-14

Items went pretty cheap early in the auction. I don’t why they let Danni get the advantage for the immunity challenge. They only made half-hearted attempts to block her from getting it. Rafe, Danni and Lydia seem to have used their time away well. The way they setup Judd was a pleasure to watch. Now it is questionable how much Lydia knew before she started game talking to Judd on the ruins. I have more respect for players who fight to save themselves than ones who sit back and take it. The kicker is Rafe lets Stephenie think it was her idea to get rid of Judd.

Early Merge episodes 8-11

I guess I was wrong about the ex Yaxha guys and what their plans were after the merge. I guess there was more plans being made than I seen but it also could be that they had no choice but to stick together. The hidden immunity idol makes it debut. This version is extremely weak compared to version 2 and 3. This version is a dud as far as I am concern and doesn’t have the bite of its cousins. It is to easy to counter because all the alliance has to do is set up a list of back up votes if it is played.

Post Switch Episodes 4-7

I like how they did the tribe switch up in this season. Where it came out of no where for the players and I am guessing the people at home. They could have tipped their hand in the previews though I don’t know.

Unlike the first three episodes I am seeing more solid alliances forming in the two camps. Everything seemed more vague before with some pairs floating about. This could be because except for the pairs none of the pre switch alliances lasted so the editors probably did not waste time on showing them.
